ORGANIZATION: Centro Hispano De East Tennessee

Centro runs afterschool tutoring/mentoring programs at two local elementary schools with significant Latino populations: Norwood and Lonsdale. We help with homework, promote literacy, and serve as mentors. All the children we serve are ESL learners and some are relatively new to this country.

Lonsdale Elementary School:

  • Days and times: Tuesdays AND Thursday (2 days only), 3:15-5:00pm
  • Location: Lonsdale Elementary School, 1317 Louisiana Ave. Knoxville, TN
  • Spanish needed: No, but it helps.
  • Minimum commitment: 1 session a week (1 hr. only) until May

Norwood Elementary School:

  • Days and times: Monday, Weds,Thursday, 3:15-4:30
  • Location: Norwood Elementary School, 1909 Merchant Dr. Knoxville, TN
  • Spanish needed: No
  • Minimum commitment: 1 session a week (1hr. 15 min.) until May

There is a large population of Hispanics in the Knoxville area that has numerous needs that often go unseen and unmet. Our main goal is to help our Latino neighbors to improve their quality of life and become better citizens through education and information services. Last year, we served hundreds of individuals and families.
