Curriculum Development Volunteer

Asian American LEAD Youth Leadership Empowerment and Development (AALEAD) is a youth development non-profit organization. Our mission is to support low-income and underserved Asian Pacific American youth with educational empowerment, identity development, and leadership opportunities through after school, summer, and mentoring programs. The AALEAD Curriculum Development Volunteer will assist the organization with its development of AALEAD’s collection of lesson plans and curriculum resources. The intern will report to a regional Program Manager.

Duration

The start and end dates are flexible pending mutual availability.

Time Commitment

  • 10-12 hours per week; scheduled during normal business hours Monday-Friday.
  • There may be flexibility to work from home on specific projects.

Location

  • Office locations will vary and may include AALEAD’s offices in Washington, DC, Silver Spring, MD, or Annandale, VA. The AALEAD Washington DC office is accessible via public transportation, including Metro and bus. The AALEAD MD and VA offices are also accessible via public bus transportation, but it can also be helpful to reliable vehicle transportation to get to these locations.
  • Additional travel may include visits to observe after school programs in DC, MD, or VA and will be covered by a travel stipend of up to $20 per week

Duties and Responsibilities

The AALEAD Curriculum Development Volunteer will be responsible for building AALEAD's Curriculum Database using program curriculum provided by AALEAD Program Coordinators. The AALEAD Curriculum Development Volunteer’s main focus will be to:

  • Work with regional teams to collect and inventory of AALEAD curriculum
  • Proofread curriculum materials submitted by team members
  • Collaborate with team members to improve and refine existing lesson plans
  • Edit existing AALEAD lesson plans and teaching tools based on staff feedback
  • Format and standardize current lesson plans
  • Write and develop lesson plans in partnership with team of curriculum developers
  • Conduct additional research to further develop and design content for lessons
  • Produce a standardized, user-friendly collection of lesson plans
  • Perform administrative tasks related to curriculum development (ie. organizing curriculum folders on Google Drive, sorting files, making copies, etc.)

Qualifications

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to write clean and concise documentation
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • Organized with attention to detail and strong ability to multitask and work independently
  • Familiarity and experience with youth development concepts and methodologies; commitment to youth development
  • Sensitivity to the needs of refugee and immigrant children and families

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior internship/work-study experience in education, training, teaching, and/or curriculum design and development
  • Experience with creating lesson plans and/or workshops

We are the leading community organization that provides educational enrichment and youth development programs to low-income and underserved Asian American youth in the Washington, D.C., metro area. Our highly dedicated staff and Board deliver specialized after school programs, one-on-one mentoring, academic support resources, and life skill development for students through After School, Summer, and Mentoring Programs. We also assist parents with school related issues affecting their children. Our goal is to provide a nurturing environment and culturally sensitive guidance so that each child we serve will be a contributing member of his or her community. Our programs currently serve over 300 students in the District of Columbia; Montgomery County, Maryland; and Fairfax County, Virginia, who represent more 16 different Asian ethnicities.
