Life is limited when you can't read medical label warnings, correspondence from your childrens' teachers, instructions on a new appliance, or complete a job application, read a street sign, or take a driver's exam. Yet many adults find themselves in exactly that position, particularly here in Essex County and Passaic Counties, where one in every four adults is considered functionally illiterate in English, according to U.S. Department of Education data.

Here's how you can help: Become a volunteer literacy tutor by attending the final tutor training workshop of the fiscal year, at the Park United Methodist Church Mission House, 12 Park Street, Bloomfield, NJ 07003. The workshop takes place Mondays and Wednesdays, from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm, on April 23, 25, 30, May 2, 7, & 9, 2018, in the church Mission House. Attendance at all sessions is encouraged. Bring your lunch.
