About
It's not too late to make a difference in someone's life, particularly in Essex and Passaic counties where one in every four adults is functionally illiterate, according to U.S. Department of Education data. Become a volunteer tutor and help adults improve their lives by teaching them to speak, read, and write English.
Join our final tutor training workshop of the fiscal year. It's an 18-hour workshop on Mondays and Wednesdays for three weeks, April 23, 25, 30, May 2, 7, & 9, 2018, 10:30 am to 1:30 pm, at Park United Methodist Church, Mission House, 12 Park Street, Bloomfield, NJ 07003. After the workshop, we'll connect you with a couple of adult students who come from the U.S. and more than 100 other countries. It's only a two-hour-per-week commitment but you could make a tremendous difference in someone's life. Our tutors report that they learn as much about the cultures of our students than they teach.
Attendance at all sesions is strongly encouraged. Bring your lunch. Contact information appears below. Please leave a number where you may be reached, if serious about attending the workshop.
Volunteers work once per week for two hours and earn a certificate as tutors of Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages from Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA), one of the largest non-profit adult literacy organizations in the country. And more than that, they help improve the lives of adults and their family members.
