It's that special day of the year when people across the globe get together and mālama honua (care for the planet). We are very excited to welcome all of you to join us at Waimea Valley for our annual Earth Day Volunteering celebration event. We will have various projects throughout the valley for helpers of all ages and volunteers will get tickets for an exclusive raffle with great prizes.

**we still have spots for the hanai 'aina conservation workday happening this day, and admission to the valley will be reduced for kama'aina and military personnel.

  • 8:30am we will have the volunteers sign waiver forms and choose which projects they want to participate in. We have various things the projects will focus on such as: garden maintenance, invasive species removal, trash cleanup, weeding and cultural site care throughout Waimea Valley property.
  • 8:45am Opening Ceremony including an introduction to the Valley and it's history and oli protocol (a traditional Hawaiian way of exchanging chants to ask for permission).
  • 9:00 am we will be splitting into groups, getting gloves for those that need to borrow and moving to the project sites.
  • 11:30am the volunteering projects will wrap up and it will be time for lunch. The volunteers are encouraged to stick around for the festivities.
  • 12:30 pm we will be staring the raffle. To receive a raffle ticket, you must have signed a waiver form and signed up for a project in the morning. These are only for the volunteers and you must be present at the drawing to win. The raffle will go until we run out of prizes. We have some awesome gifts in store for the volunteers like a free annual pass to the valley.

Speaking of passes, anyone who participates in the Earth Day volunteering will be welcomed to come into the valley for free for the rest of that day. So you can volunteer in the morning, win a prize during lunch and go for a swim at the waterfall and a stroll through our amazing valley to end a beautiful day.

We will also have booths set up for community organizations to share their information and upcoming events. The volunteers are encouraged to visit with them during their time here.

We are all looking forward to a wonderful event and we hope to continue to grow and expand this opportunity in the years to come. Please get in touch with the Waimea Valley Volunteer Coordinator if you have any questions or want to RSVP.

How This Helps Our Community

This work will help Waimea valley protect its plant collections as well as the rare and endangered animals we care for. it also helps us to protect the estuary and because everything eventually goes to the ocean it also helps to maintain the near shore ecosystem of the big wave surfing beach, Waimea Bay and the nearby Marine Conservation District.

Description

Waimea Valley is a living pu'uhonua (sanctuary) for and by kanaka (Hawaiian People). We strive to celebrate and share a vibrant and living Hawaiian culture with the world.

The land managed by our organization is nearly 1,900 acres. We have a beautiful botanical garden spanning about 300 acres from our waterfall to the highway. The garden contains over 5,500 species of plants from all over the world including many rare collections and some of Hawaii's most rare and endangered species. It's not just endangered plants here, we also protect endangered birds and fish in this amazing ecosystem. The back 1,500 or so acres is set up as conservation land where we are actively protecting and rebuilding the native forest habitat.

We welcome you to experience Waimea Valley and be a part of the volunteer team that works to protect this sacred place. Let's honor and perpetuate Hawai`i’s past, be active stewards of our present and plan for a prosperous and healthy future.
