ORGANIZATION: Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium

The museum has an amazing display of animals and cultural pieces from around the world, as well as the only planetarium in the state.

To be fair, our lions are pretty tame. So are our polar bears and grizzlies. The moose is pretty quiet too. But, we ARE looking for some great volunteers to share in our visitors’ excitement as they get up close and personal to these animals and explore the exhibits and hands on stations throughout the museum. Do you have a few hours each week to give?

We’re looking for volunteers at the front desk and in the Nature Store with the following qualities:

  • Friendly disposition
  • Customer service and cash register experience (willing to train the right person)
  • The ability to adapt to a fluctuating number of guests at any given time

Benefits include:

  • 20% discount in the Nature Store
  • Free admission to the museum and all planetarium shows for volunteer and their immediate family.

Shifts range from half day to full day options and are available Monday through Friday.

Contact Jen D’Agostino for an application or for more information.

Mission Statement

The Mission of the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium is to inspire appreciation for our place in the natural world and to motivate our stewardship of a healthy planet.

Description

The Fairbanks Museum was founded in 1889 by St. Johnsbury industrialist Franklin Fairbanks.

Inside our classic Victorian building, you’ll find a dazzling array of animals and artifacts, dolls and tools, shells and fossils, and much more! Take a trip through the cosmos in Vermont's only public planetarium. A full calendar of events, workshops, lectures and field programs invites everyone to explore the nature of our world. V

When Franklin Fairbanks opened the doors to this Museum in St. Johnsbury, Vermont over a century ago, he invited all of New England to see beyond the horizon by bringing exquisite examples of natural science and beautiful artifacts from around the world to his home town. His "cabinet of curiosities" grew to include our National Historic Register building, a triumph of Victorian architecture, the cornerstone of St. Johnsbury's Victorian Main Street. Inside, our collections include some 175,000 objects.

The Lymann Spitzer Jr. Planetarium, Vermont's only public planetarium, opened in 1961 and continues to offer guided tours of the cosmos every day.

Since 1981, meteorologists at the Museum have produced Eye on the Sky weather programming that is broadcast daily by Vermont Public Radio.
