Day in the Dirt
ORGANIZATION: SMOKEY HOUSE CENTER
Please visit the new page to apply.
Join us to celebrate the 6th Annual Day in the Dirt and kick off the new Education Garden at Smokey House Center!
We will clean raise garden beds spaces, add soil and compost to the raised beds, turn compost, plant seeds and build a chicken staircase. If there is time we may even clean up some perennials.
Smokey House Center Community Farm has recently started a Community Seed Box. Bring seeds to share and swap! We will set up a table with envelopes and markers to allow for folks to take just a few seeds instead of packets.
The Education Garden space will be used by our local elementary school students, a community school from Manchester and our very own Danby Mountain Day Camp campers. Let's get this spa ce ready for all the growing and learning that will happen here with our local area youth!
Tools and directions will be provided. We have some garden gloves to share and will have a cooler with water. There will be signs from the parking lot to direct you to the Education Garden space. Parking will be in the lot closer to the two white buildings at 426 Danby Mountain Road.
Day in the Dirt is a statewide event coordinated by the incredible folks at Vermont Community Garden Network in Burlington. To see photos and learn more about the statewide event visit: https://vcgn.org/ day-in-the-dirt/

Description
We are building a vibrant farm education center here in Danby. Launched in 2016, the Smokey House Community Farm engaged local youth, visiting education groups, and other volunteers to grow food for hunger relief and community programs, while laying the groundwork for future additional programs and partnerships. We are growing storage crops (e.g., carrots, beets, onions, potatoes, squash, cabbage, etc.) for fall programming and late season distribution. The Smokey House Community Farm honors our strong reputation for work-based learning in a manner that connects us more directly to a wider audience and to the local community.
