Sidewalker - Heartland Horse Heroes

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: HEARTLAND HORSE HEROES INC

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

The Sidewalker walks (and sometimes jogs briefly) beside the mounted Rider during a lesson to provide encouragement to the Rider and also assist with Rider safety. Safety assistance primarily involves close observation and communication with the Instructor, but may occasionally include physically helping the Rider to remain balanced when necessary. Each Rider requires either one or two Sidewalkers. The Sidewalker role requires no experience with horses or the disabled. Brief training is provided. Volunteers may choose which lesson they want to work with weekly or on a lesson-by-lesson basis.

About HEARTLAND HORSE HEROES INC

Location:

Mission Statement

OUR MISSION: to provide equine-assisted therapies and equestrian activities for individuals who have mental, physical, emotional, or social challenges or learning disabling conditions.

Description

Help us give people with disabilities a leg up! Equine-assisted therapy contributes to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of people with disabilities by the use of horse-related activities and education. People participate in our programs in groups or as individuals. Volunteers are essential to this effort, and our most frequent and pressing volunteer needs are for horse leaders (some horse handling experience needed) and "sidewalkers" (no special experience needed) during lessons. Heartland Horse Heroes is a premier accredited center affiliated with the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH) and the Therapeutic Riding Association of Virginia (TRAV). Celebrating 10 years of service in 2018, Heartland Horse Heroes continues to expand our program offerings thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers like you. Without your help, our program could not exist! Contact Volunteer Coordinator Teresa Wray at 434-444-0530 or at horseheroesvolunteers@gmail.com.
