EcoWorks is a 501c3 non-profit organization in New Haven working to creatively engage the community in materials reuse to help protect the environment and build local collaboration and resilience. As a 99% volunteer-run organization, EcoWorks appreciates and relies on the involvement of community members with a diverse set of skills to assist in all aspects of the non-profit. Currently we are seeking a Bookkeeper to assume a portion of the duties of Treasurer. The Bookkeeping Assistant is a volunteer position and collaborates with the Board Co-Chairs in support of the following tasks:

  • Maintain all financial transaction records in Quickbooks on a weekly basis
  • Receive invoices and seek appropriate approvals for payment
  • Prepare checks and send to Board Co-Chairs as appropriate for signature and mailing
  • Receive income, record checks in an annual check log, and prepare deposits; (Deposits and the log are sent to the Board of Directors for review)
  • Manage monthly payroll processing and payroll taxreports/payments if applicable
  • Reconcile bank, investment and PayPal accounts monthly, and maintain file of bank statements
  • Make monthly reports to the Board of Directors and other appropriate persons as requested
  • Prepare quarterly P&L reports for Board of Directors review
  • Transfer funds with approval between EcoWorks accounts as necessary
  • Prepare the IRS Form 990 for review by EcoWorks accountants (preferred) or provide them with needed information for that

Preferred Skills

The ideal candidate will have formal finance training, non-profit accounting experience and be familiar with Quickbooks products.

  • Solid knowledge of bookkeeping and generally accepted accounting principles
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience with
    • Bookkeeping
    • Payroll processing
    • Tax preparation (IRS Nonprofit Form 990)
  • Be detail-oriented and accurate
  • Possess good communication skills and the ability to handle several tasks in tandem
  • Be discrete and understand matters ofconfidentiality
  • Excellent computer skills, including competence in standard accounting software (Quickbooks preferred), email and Excel
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business preferred, or equivalent business experience
