ORGANIZATION: MetroWest Hospice an Amedisys Co

Hello, my Name is Tory McBrine I am the Volunteer Coordinator for MetroWest Hospice. I am looking to recruit Veterans for our Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer Program. Our nation's Veterans have faced difficult issues throughout their lifetime, and they continue to face unique challenges as they get older. These challenges are often best addressed by another Veteran.

Our Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer Program aims to pair recruited Veteran volunteers with our Veteran hospice patients. Veteran volunteers have the distinct ability to relate and connect with Veteran patients thereby creating a safe environment where life review and healing can occur. Once paired, they can share in their common language and experiences, forming strong relational bonds.

Veteran volunteers can make a difference in a variety of ways including:

  • Providing companionship
  • Listening as Veteran patient reminisces
  • Helping replace lost medals
  • Reading and writing letters and email messages
  • Playing chess, cards or board games
  • Participating in pinning ceremonies
  • Calling or visiting Veterans on Veterans Day
  • Participating in a variety of different veteran events that we sponsor
Our volunteers are an important part of our hospice care team, helping improve the quality of life for our Veteran patients, their families, and caregivers. To learn more please contact me at victoria.mcbrine@amedisys.com or call me at 508-266-8290

Mission Statement

We honor those we serve with compassionate hospice and personal care services that apply the highest quality clinical practices toward allowing our patients to maintain a sense of independence, quality of life and dignity.

Description

Our Volunteers work side-by-side with the professional staff to provide patient and family support. As a friend who pledges to be with them through the uncertainties of the weeks ahead, hospice volunteers offer patients and families a listening ear, a hand to hold, and the presence of a caring heart. Services offered by the hospice volunteers are as varied as the needs of the patients and families. All hospice volunteers receive specialized training by me before assignment to patients and families. There is no area of hospice where the expertise and enthusiasm of the volunteer is not a valuable asset.
