Becoming a volunteer crew member is a perfect way to give back to the community, stay involved in the outdoors, meet new people, learn new skills and help save lives. We work with the Thurston County Sheriff's Office to conduct missing person searches in rural and urban settings, recovery missions, evidence searches, and flood control operations.

A general orientation meeting is held each year in September. It is a great opportunity to meet crew members and learn about what it takes to become a volunteer with our unit. Training starts the week after orientation, so it is important to communicate with us if you are interested but cannot attend orientation.

Requirements to join:

  • be at least 14 years old at the start of training
  • available to attend two Monday night classroom training sessions (at 7pm) each month: September - April
  • available to attend 5-7 weekend field trainings (some overnights)
Our next general orientation meeting is September 17th, 2018 at 7 pm. Located at the Thurston County Emergency Management building (9521 Tilley Rd. SW, Olympia WA 98512)

No prior skills or training is required, our annual training program will provide you with all the skills you need.

Mission Statement

The Thurston County Unit of Washington Explorer Search and Rescue (TCWESAR) is an all-volunteer organization which provides life-saving search and rescue services for the citizens of the State of Washington. We provide people, planning, coordination, logistics, training, and equipment to support emergency responses for the Washington State Military Department’s Emergency Management Division and the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office. The TCWESAR is the only ground search unit in Thurston County, the "911 of the woods." The unit was founded in 1977 as one of the first youth-based search and rescue organizations in the nation. We have volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.

Description

Our unit is a 100% volunteer organization dedicated to helping those lost and injured in our community. We rely on donations and fundraisers to fund our life-saving operation.

We work with the Thurston County Sheriff's Office to conduct missing person searches in rural and urban settings, recovery missions, evidence searches, and flood control operations.

We are a part of the Washington Explorer Search and Rescue (WESAR), a statewide organization comprised of youth and adult volunteers.
