Families on the Olympic Peninsula need support now more than ever with end-of-life care. Hospice helps families at no cost (funded by Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance) when they have terminal illnesses. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused families to make difficult choices and added many challenges for families trying to meet their loved one's care needs. Hospice volunteers help directly to alleviate stress and open up additional options to families.

As a hospice volunteer, you can provide direct service to our community's most vulnerable members and families coping with significant change or crises. For volunteers who want to help families but do not feel ready to volunteer in the homes or directly with family members, there are opportunities to help with hospice administration or phone calls to patients and family members. Hospice volunteers can provide respite care, such as staying with the patient so the caregivers can take care of themselves, run errands, or take a nap. They can provide companionship for patients and caregivers, assist with virtual communication with distant family, do puzzles or crafts, assist with daily living like preparing meals or light housework, care for pets, or other supportive tasks. Volunteers can specialize in what they want to do according to their talents; for example, some volunteers specialize in bereavement support after the death of a loved one.

Volunteering in hospice is one of the most rewarding ways to give back to our community by supporting and dignifying human life.
