Dear Participant,

Thanks for your interest in the World Arctic Fund's 2018 Land Radio and Research Mission (LRRM), which will occur for two weeks in August 2018.

Mission Starts: August in Longyearbyen
Mission Ends: August in Longyearbyen
Location for two weeks close to Ny-Alesund, in Svalbard

This mission will occur on land where volunteers and researchers conduct experiments in the area near Ny-Alesund in Svalbard for approximately two weeks time. During that period, volunteers will assist will create and maintain a campsite, while conducting scientific research experiments and supporting the boat crew that is participating in the AISE (Airship Italia Search Expedition.) The boat crew will transmit radio messages to the land crew, who will then broadcast them to radio receivers around the world, giving them almost-live feedback about the status of the search expedition, which is focussed on finding the remains of the airship known as Italia, which was lost near the North Pole in a tragic accident in 1928. 90 years after the tragedy, the World Arctic Fund hopes to find the airship remains and give the world play-by-play details while doing so. You can be a part of this as history is made - by revisiting and rediscovering history. Plus - you can help to research microplastics, pollution and climate change.

Mission Statement

THE ARCTIC IS THE KEY TO UNDERSTANDING WHAT HUMANITY IS DOING TO THE WORLD. The Ice of the Arctic is melting and this is one of the most visible indicators of our changing climate. The World Arctic Fund wants to raise awareness about the key role played by the Arctic in keeping our global climate stable. Through scientific evidence and studies, we are warning the world about how the Arctic ice melt could trigger uncontrollable climate change.
