Building Skills Partnership (BSP) is a non-profit whose mission it is to improve the quality of life for low-wage property service workers and their families by increasing their skills, access to education and opportunities for career and community advancement. BSP is preparing to launch a certification program for janitors called the "Green Janitor Education Program" at a California State Department headquarters near downtown Sacramento. In this program, janitors will develop competency in sustainability efforts in the operations and maintenance of buildings. The program covers an introduction to sustainability concepts, green cleaning practices, and water and energy efficiency. The workers take two exams and are certified upon completion of the program (30 hours) and passing the examinations. The course is taught in English.
What is the volunteer opportunity?
We need 1 bilingual Greek/English volunteer to work primarily with one Greek-speaking student in class. The volunteer will guide the student through understanding concepts, translating content from English to Greek when necessary, and coordinating with the instructor to supplement learning.
Volunteer requirements include:
- Proficient in English and Greek.
- Willing to commit to 1 class session per week for 15 weeks. The class is held on Wednesdays from 9AM-11AM
- Patience, flexibility, willingness to learn!
- Optional / Ideal: Interested in sustainability concepts

The Building Skills Partnership (BSP) represents a unique non-profit collaboration between the property service workers’ union Service Employees International Union - United Service Workers West (SEIU- USWW), commercial building owners, property service employers, client companies and community leaders. BSP offers comprehensive programs tailored to the diverse needs of the community. Our core strategies leverage workforce development, immigrant integration, and community advancement. We have seven offices across the state of California from Sacramento to San Diego. Building Skills Partnership program areas and its curriculum play a key role in driving the productivity and competitiveness of the industry and contributing to the economic and social development of our communities throughout the state.
