Operation SPLASH, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing back the bays through cleaning up local waterways, activism and education. In the past three decades since our founding, volunteers have rescued more than 2,000,000 pounds of trash, marine debris and navigational hazards from our bays, beaches and waterways.

At this time, SPLASH has a strong need for volunteer boat captains and crew. No previous boating experience is required as you will be provided with training. Your membership and assistance will help us continue our fight to keep Long Island’s waters healthy and beautiful!

Please visit our website at http://www.operationsplash.org/ for more information about our organization, including overviews of our outreach programs. Please feel free to contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Elisa, with your interest or any questions at info@operationsplash.org.

Mission Statement

At Operation SPLASH we are committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island’s shores. Our mission is to bring back the bays through cleaning waterways, advocacy and education. We provide a solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public education and individual participation.

Description

Since our founding in 1990, Operation SPLASH has grown to several thousand members. We currently have seven chapters all along Long Island’s south shore. Our six SPLASH boats run March through November and are operated by volunteer captains and crew members.

Over the past three decades, our volunteers have rescued more than 2,000,000 pounds of trash, marine debris and navigational hazards from our bays, beaches and waterways. Most of what we pull from the water comes from the land around us. SPLASH has also designed and maintains the award-winning Mill Basin Debris Trap.

Aside from collecting trash, we have also made tremendous headway in stemming the awful tide of sewage being dumped into our bays as well as drastically reducing the amount of toxic pollution entering our waters through storm runoff. SPLASH crews actively monitor and identify
pollutants and their sources. To reduce the flow of toxins and trash into our bays SPLASH has collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County.

Our award-winning SPLASH education program is teaching thousands of students each year about the importance of our South Shore Bays and the challenges that they face. Students of all ages, from elementary through college, enjoy the classroom program. In addition to this we
also offer boat tours, a trip down the Nautical Mile and viewing saltwater tanks brimming with local marine life.
