ORGANIZATION: Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

  • 4 people are interested

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is recruiting a team of volunteers to assist in a new effort to promote digital literacy by offering an approachable and accessible introduction to coding to adults and older teens.

During weekly in-person sessions, participants will do activities, problem solving, and have discussions based on content that they completed using online tutorials between sessions. The group will be led by a knowledgeable facilitator who can address questions, put concepts into context for learners, and guide the group to completing the workshop.

The workshop is based on selected modules of PythonRoom.com/

Some highlights of this workshop are:

  • It is for people new to programming
  • It is not a complete curriculum, but an on-ramp
  • It provides structure, accountability, and support (evidence suggests that there is a higher online course completion rate if paired with in-person meetings)
  • It covers key concepts including input, output, data types, logic operators, branching, repeating, and functions.
  • Participants can then continue learning about Python independently or with other members from the group.

Our ideal candidate would have the following qualifications:

  • Knowledge of computer programming with at least some experience using Python
  • A love of learning and discovery
  • An ability to work with coding beginners
  • Interest in taking leadership in a group learning environment

That commitment would include:

  • Co-leading weekly 1.5 hour sessions following our curriculum for 6 weeks at a time
  • Being available for approximately 1-2 hours to communicate by email or chat with participants, check progress of participants, and prepare to lead each session.
  • Committing to co-lead at least two 6-week sessions per year.
