ORGANIZATION: Sexual Assault Victim Advocate (SAVA) Center

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
  • 2 people are interested

The Sexual Assault Victim Advocate (SAVA) Center is looking for active, supportive individuals to be mentors to 8-12 year old boys and girls this summer!
Mentors will help facilitate lessons on self-esteem, teamwork, stereotypes, healthy friendships and violence prevention all while training for the Human Race 5k on Saturday July 28th!

As a mentor, your job would be to help facilitate the activities, help us keep the kids focused and under control, and to get to know the kids by developing relationships with them that allows them to feel safe asking questions about the topics we discuss. In addition, we pair each mentor with 2-3 kids to run the 5k with at the end of the summer.

Our goal is to have mentors attend at least 8 sessions throughout the summer (equaling about 1 hour volunteering per week). We ask mentors to try to attend the same group each week, because it helps the kids get comfortable. We also ask that mentors attend one of our 2-hour trainings, which are currently scheduled for May 30th from 6-8pm and June 2nd from 9-11am.

About Sexual Assault Victim Advocate (SAVA) Center

Mission Statement

The Sexual Assault Victim Advocate (SAVA) Center’s mission is to provide crisis intervention, advocacy and counseling for all those affected by sexual violence and provide prevention programs through community outreach and education. We envision a culture change that results in the end of sexual violence.

Description

SAVA began as a rape crisis hotline in 1976 under the Larimer Center for Mental Health and, in 2003, became an independent nonprofit agency. In October 2010, SAVA expanded its services to include neighboring Weld County. SAVA now serves as the only rape crisis center in Larimer and Weld Counties dedicated exclusively to serving the needs of sexual assault survivors. Each year, SAVA provides confidential support to over 700 victims of sexual assault and provides education to over 1,000 community members and 5,000 students. SAVA is a member of Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), the Colorado Organization of Victim’s Assistance (COVA), and the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CCASA).

In addition to providing direct services to survivors, SAVA aims to reduce the incidence of sexual violence in our community through prevention education programming for youth. Our programs help youth ages 8-18 create safer spaces for themselves and others by addressing the root causes of sexual violence, promoting healthy relationships, and increasing social-activism and leadership skills.
