JVS provides a broad range of services including adult education, skills training, job readiness training, job placement and support, and access to post-secondary education. JVS assists employers in their search for well-qualified job applicants and their initiatives to upgrade the skills of their incumbent workforce.

Program/Department Overview:

JVS works with employers to develop and customize training and education services for their employees at their location. Based on the employers’ business and workforce development goals, JVS will provide: English language classes (for non-native speakers), adult basic education, pre-college classes, customer service training, effective communication classes, supervisory training, computer classes, and medical terminology classes. Employer partners include CVS, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, Legal Sea Foods, Hebrew Senior Life, Partners Healthcare, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital, Mass General Hospital, and many more.

Description:

Supporting basic computer users. This course is an introduction to typing, email, and basic system navigation. All students are MGH employees and come from a wide variety of departments in the hospital. Most employees in this class will be largely new to the computer and are looking for a basic introduction. They may have limited knowledge of the keyboard and mouse, or they may not have recent computer experience and be looking for a refresher of computer basics. The instructor creates and delivers the lessons and creates handouts and activities, and the volunteer will provide individual and small group support as needed.

Volunteer Qualifications:
Patience and understanding of adult learners who are still new to using a computer. Basic knowledge of computers helpful, expert knowledge not necessary. Patience and understanding of adult learners who may be anxious or frustrated when using a computer. Cultural competency with employees of various backgrounds and first languages

Additional requirements:

To be a volunteer at MGH, you must go through the MGH volunteer orientation which includes meeting the MGH volunteer coordinator, submitting proof of immunizations (or getting them done at MGH occupational health), and logging hours in their system. Going through this process makes you eligible for additional volunteer benefits including free parking, invitations to special volunteer events, and more!
