Mission Statement

The Lupus Foundation of America North Carolina Chapter is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all people affected by lupus through programs of research, education, and advocacy. With the help of informed volunteers, lupus medical experts, and committed and caring supporters, we: Support research and conduct education programs so everyone affected by lupus can have an improved quality of life; provide information to ensure people with lupus and their families get answers and health professionals know about new means to diagnose and manage the disease; and, conduct activities to increase awareness of lupus, rally public support for those who are affected by lupus, and advocate on their behalf.

Description

Lupus is a complex, chronic disease that causes the body's immune system to turn on itself. Antibodies, which usually defend against infection and illness, attack the body's own healthy tissue and organs, leading to inflammation and damage. An estimated 1.4 milliam Americans suffers from this disease. Thousands of Americans die each year from lupus-related complications. As yet, the cause of lupus is not known, but scientists are working hard to discover both the cause and the cure for this debilitating disease

The Lupus Foundation of America, North Carolina Chapter is part of the national force devoted to solving the cruel mystery of lupus while providing caring support to those who suffer from its brutal impact. We work with local health professionals and volunteers to provide information and programs to ensure people with lupus and their families get answers and health professionals know about new means to diagnose and manage the disease. The chapter serves an estimated 45,000 living with lupus in North Carolina
