Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.

You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a classroom coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.

This workshop needs your help in downtown Manhattan, NYC. To volunteer, reply with the program code to volunteer@behindthebook.org. We'll supply the address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

Program DHS9TJ-J

Date: Monday, April 23rd
Time: 2:00 AM - 3:30 PM
Volunteer Role: Writing Coach

About the workshop: Ninth-graders read Tiffany D. Jackson’s Allegedly, a haunting, character-driven YA novel based on a true crime, which explores the gray areas in our understanding of justice, family, and truth. Students will debate whether the main character is a reliable narrator, then write a personal narrative about a difficult decision they made, and how they overcame the challenges it posed. Writing coaches will guide groups in polishing their work.
