Volunteer Description - Human Resource Intern, Volunteers

Organization Summary: The Arc Minnesota is a non-profit, grassroots advocacy organization serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. Intellectual and developmental disabilities include Down syndrome, autism, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy and related conditions. The Arc helps people address issues such as early intervention, education, transition to adulthood, employment, housing, health care, guardianship, transportation, supports available to families/caregivers and on policy issues at local, state and national levels.

Position Summary: The Arc’s HR Intern Volunteers is a self-motivated collaborator who performs a variety of recruitment, placement, training, evaluation, recognition and administrative duties to support agency operations and outcomes. This position supports a broad range of volunteer activities.


  • Assists with development of volunteer opportunities; includes creation of position descriptions/work plans
  • Volunteer recruitment and community outreach
  • Coordination and participation of volunteers at events, i.e. The Arc Gala, Tapemark
  • Process volunteer/intern applicants and provide screening to ensure applicants are appropriate and available for volunteer and intern positions
  • Conduct orientation and exit interviews with interns/volunteers
  • Train staff on working effectively with volunteers and interns
  • Track outcomes and hours of volunteers/interns in Arc’s database
  • Generate quarterly volunteer reports reflecting departmental outcomes
  • Evaluation of volunteer program; make recommendations for improvement
  • Administrative and database support
  • Identify items to be posted on The Arc’s Facebook page and other social media modalities
  • A written recap of their experience and what they learned from their internship with Arc
  • Perform other duties as necessary

  • Student pursuing a degree in human resources, non-profit management, volunteer management, community relations, communication, marketing or related field preferred

Time Commitment: A human resources 101-focused position for the summer 2018. Must be available to intern 6-8 hours per week. Hours are Monday-Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm with occasional evenings and Saturdays as needed. An exit interview will also be conducted to gauge intern experience and to make recommendations for improvement. Position includes a $500 stipend payable in August or the utilization of work study if eligible.
