Volunteer Description - Spanish-Speaking Outreach Intern

Organization Summary: The Arc Minnesota is a non-profit, grassroots advocacy organization serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. Intellectual and developmental disabilities include Down syndrome, autism, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy and related conditions. The Arc helps people address issues such as early intervention, education, transition to adulthood, employment, housing, health care, guardianship, transportation, supports available to families/caregivers and on policy issues at local, state and national levels.

Position Summary: This position assists with Arc’s Adelante Networking Groups and with outreach and advocacy to the Spanish speaking community. This position provides administrative and logistical support to the team and assists with evaluations, protocol adjustments, expansion efforts and with other duties as needed. Work is conducted in collaboration and under supervision of Youth and Adult Services Team, which includes attending monthly team meetings for updates, brainstorming, support and planning.


  • Make reminder calls to families or support families who make calls to those who attend Adelante monthly group meetings; schedule/coordinate taxi rides as needed
  • Plan and facilitate childcare activities for Arc’s Minneapolis (2 nd Thursday of the month) and St. Paul (4 th Wednesday of the month) Adelante groups
  • Lead childcare activities with volunteers at monthly Adelante meetings; train new volunteers
  • Coordinate volunteer sign-in process night of Adelante meetings
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment for Adelante groups and establish community organization connections
  • Assist with logistics night of Adelante meetings; includes interacting with families
  • Assist with planning family fun events as requested to include families who participate in Adelante
  • Identify items to be posted on The Arc’s Facebook page and other social media modalities
  • Provide support to families in leadership development opportunities
  • Assists with program expansion efforts; assists with outreach efforts to diverse communities
  • Assist with internal and external training needs, communication and process refinement
  • Evaluates program effectiveness and makes recommendations for improvement
  • A written recap of their experience and what they learned from their internship with Arc
  • Other duties as needed

  • Must be a fluent Spanish language speaker and writer
  • Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills necessary
  • Ability to successfully work both as a team member and independently

Time Commitment: Must be available 6:30 - 8:30pm on the 2nd Thursday and 4th Wednesday of the month for the 2018-2019 academic year. Position starts week of August 27th, 2018 and requires a 10-14 hours per week commitment for 2018-2019 and an option summer commitment of 5-6 hours per week. Most work completed Monday-Friday between 8:30-5:00pm. An exit interview will also be conducted to gauge intern experience and to make recommendations for improvement. Includes a $500 stipend for summer, a $1000 stipend in December and May or the utilization of work study if eligible.
