The science of food program
Volunteers help in our garden

Many different skills are needed. Students who are enrolled in the summer program at the Southside Boys and Girls Club will be able to participate in SELF International's program exploring the science of food for two afternoons a week. Part of the time will be spent growing produce in their own garden and other times they will be pursuing food science and nutrition through experiments and food preparation. We will also be exploring the environmental and climatic conditions related to growing our own food. If you have gardening expertise and experience you can share with children ages 6 - 12 and/or nutrition and food science background or experience you would be perfect for this program. Story telling skills would especially helpful for our journaling and story telling projects. Students will try different growing methods like containers or straw bales. We will need someone who can help students build a fence and trellis. Students will also learn about various cultural influences, alternative urban food production methods, and potential careers in these areas. Field trips may be held at varying times. Everything is hands-on and fun. For more detailed information please contact us. We are also looking for donations of compost, tools and materials for this project.

Mission Statement

SELF International, Inc . is a not for profit, educational organization whose mission is to promote literacy, creative education in science, math and the arts for all ages in U.S. communities of need and targeted developing countries in order to heighten personal and national levels of academic achievement. This mission is rooted in hope and a vision of social justice, upholding the belief that all people are created equal and are equally deserving of quality education and that responsible stewardship of our world is dependent upon an educated citizenship.

Description

SELF International, a nonprofit educational organization based in Minneapolis, MN, serves as a magnet for gathering students, communities, teachers, other academics, professionals in STEM, and organizations together to give underserved students and their families equal access and opportunities for out-of-school learning. We meet the students in their neighborhoods and schools, eliminating the need for transportation to other venues. We offer free programs because nearly all of the people in our programs fall into the lowest income brackets. We will bring high quality materials and resources. Mentors from STEM fields meet with students and introduce them to new options and possibilities for their future. Students learn that science is everywhere and discover its relevance to their own lives. Students and families develop a science identity helping them feel more connected to science and build a culture of learning in their families and communities. Students gain confidence in their ability to pursue STEM. Through hands-on activities and personal experiences in cutting edge science and technology students discover that learning is fun and creative. Students’ curiosity and questions guide them into new ideas and subjects. They make connections they had never noticed or considered before. STEM will not be merely a word to our students, it will contain a whole world of exciting possibilities. Students will carry this interest and excitement for learning to their school classes, and the achievement gap will be lowered.
