Hands-on activities

SELF International is working in collaboration with SciGirls to utilize the SciGirls best practices for middle school aged students, targeting Latina groups. Once a week, which day has yet to be determined, you would work with another team leader offering fun STEM related activities. You will be joined by STEM professionals who will introduce students to potential STEM careers. It would be awesome if you are in a STEM field and/or speak Spanish, but it is not necessary. If you are interested please contact us at SELF and we will supply additional information.

Mission Statement

SELF International, Inc . is a not for profit, educational organization whose mission is to promote literacy, creative education in science, math and the arts for all ages in U.S. communities of need and targeted developing countries in order to heighten personal and national levels of academic achievement. This mission is rooted in hope and a vision of social justice, upholding the belief that all people are created equal and are equally deserving of quality education and that responsible stewardship of our world is dependent upon an educated citizenship.

Description

SELF International, a nonprofit educational organization based in Minneapolis, MN, serves as a magnet for gathering students, communities, teachers, other academics, professionals in STEM, and organizations together to give underserved students and their families equal access and opportunities for out-of-school learning. We meet the students in their neighborhoods and schools, eliminating the need for transportation to other venues. We offer free programs because nearly all of the people in our programs fall into the lowest income brackets. We will bring high quality materials and resources. Mentors from STEM fields meet with students and introduce them to new options and possibilities for their future. Students learn that science is everywhere and discover its relevance to their own lives. Students and families develop a science identity helping them feel more connected to science and build a culture of learning in their families and communities. Students gain confidence in their ability to pursue STEM. Through hands-on activities and personal experiences in cutting edge science and technology students discover that learning is fun and creative. Students’ curiosity and questions guide them into new ideas and subjects. They make connections they had never noticed or considered before. STEM will not be merely a word to our students, it will contain a whole world of exciting possibilities. Students will carry this interest and excitement for learning to their school classes, and the achievement gap will be lowered.
