Student 1

The mentor program is part of the core program mode at Year Up Greater Philadelphia and Wilmington. Being a mentor means providing professional advice, career and educational planning support, and networking opportunities. It is an especially personal way to impact a young adult’s life!

"Having Christy Strawbridge as my mentor has been a true blessing. She is extremely smart, charismatic, humble, driven, generous, supportive, and always has a positive attitude. Christy focused on both my professional life and my personal life - she saw me as a real person and treated me like a friend. She is a strong role mode l, and I can’t thank her enough for all that she has done for me." Yeny Arango, Class of January 2014

All of our mentors must be able to make the commitment to spend regular, consistent time with their Year Up mentee for one year. Mentors must have at least 4 years of professional work experience. Every mentor is required to attend mentor orientation after being matched with a mentee, and is encouraged to attend the in-person and webinar training sessions throughout the year. Our students are currently taking classes in IT and Business.

Expectations for Mentors:

-You are committed as a mentor for 12 months starting in May. The program is focused on professional development for your mentee.

-Once matched, you’d meet in person with your mentee every other week for three months to establish a strong relationship.

-After you have been working together for three months, you’d meet in person every 3-4 weeks.

-You would communicate weekly via text, phone, or email throughout your match

-We encourage you to participate in ongoing online and in-person trainings that we will offer during your time as a mentor.

Mission Statement

Year Up’s mission is to close the Opportunity Divide by providing urban young adults with the skills, experience, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education. We achieve this mission through a high support, high expectation model that combines marketable job skills, stipends, internships and college credits. Our holistic approach focuses on students’ professional and personal development to place these young adults on a viable path to economic self-sufficiency.

Description

We are wasting talent when we can’t afford to waste anyone.

Millions of young adults in this country are facing social and economic injustice. Despite talent and motivation, they lack access to higher education and careers that provide them with a living wage. At the same time, our economy needs help. U.S. businesses are calling for more and better-trained talent to compete on the global stage, but there will not be enough skilled workers to meet that demand.

Economic justice = Economic prosperity.

These are troubling realities, but they represent a tremendous national opportunity. Providing underserved young adults with the skills, knowledge and experience today’s businesses demand ensures those young adults will begin successful careers and earn a living wage. In return, employers gain access to a wider pipeline of well-trained talent than ever before -the talent they need to compete across the globe.

A hand up, not a hand out.

This is not charity, nor a handout. This is good sense. Economic justice for young adults equals economic prosperity for U.S. businesses, and the nation at large.
