The Summer Associate Program with the Star of the Sea Foundation (SOS) aims to create more food secure families and support nutritious food choices for children. Summer Associate members will 1) expand and support the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), 2) assist with nutrition education efforts, and 3) raise awareness of and eliminate barriers to SNAP and other food/nutrition-access services.

Reports to: Nutrition Coordinator Work Hours: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm
Time Period: Short-term,
VISTA position: May 29th - August 6th
Benefits: Bi-weekly living stipend ($791.70, or $9.90/hour) Segal Education Award ($1,253) OR cash stipend ($345)

AmeriCorps Summer Associate Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct outreach in targeted communities of low-income individuals to raise awareness of the Summer Food Service Program;
  2. Work in the Community Kitchen to assist with all aspects of meal preparation and clean-up;
  3. Assist staff members at SFSP sites, which include childcare centers, summer camps, and community centers, to serve meals, complete daily & monthly paperwork, set-up and clean-up eating areas, and coordinate and/or lead enrichment activities; Auxiliary Responsibilities:
  4. Work with the SOS Nutrition Team to develop a nutrition education curriculum to be implemented at SFSP sites and childcare centers;
  5. Conduct nutrition education classes and activities for children at SFSP sites and partner agencies;
  6. Work at the SOS Outreach Mission to provide information to individuals about benefits they may be eligible to receive.
Required Qualifications:
  1. High school diploma, and be 18 years or older before the start of the VISTA program (May 29 th )
  2. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  3. Experience in a restaurant or kitchen setting a plus, but not required
  4. Research experience a plus, or desire to learn more about nutrition education
  5. Knowledge or interest in child nutrition and hunger-related issues
