ORGANIZATION: JOVENES INC

Jovenes (which means youth in Spanish) helps young men and women, ages 18-25, end their cycle of homelessness. Located in Boyle Heights and serving the Southeaster part of LA County, we provide everything our youth need to get off the streets and into housing. We go deep with our youth implementing a plan that addresses their needs for housing, healthcare, education, employment and trauma recovery. We are a home and family for those without, providing an innovative program of stable housing options, compassionate care, life skills training, and employment & education support for young adults seeking a path to life change. Our mission is to help homeless youth become productive and integrated members of society. We believe our young people are not defined by their homelessness and deserve the chance to achieve their dreams. We are recruiting one VISTA who will help our agency increase our capacity to help our youth obtain jobs that will transform their lives. This opportunity will provide VISTA with direct experience in non-profit management and development. You will learn about how community based organizations increase their capacity through resource and partner development while taking on special projects to raise awareness of the challenges faced by homeless youth while increasing the profile of the agency. Activities include, but are not limited to:
- Program design and implementation
- Creating connections with other non-profit partners and employers
- Creating social media content
- Identification of additional resources that will benefit the youth served by Jovenes, Inc.

Member Duties: Our AmeriCorps Member will help Jovenes build capacity by creating partnerships and developing relationships with local employers and help identify other resources that will help youth obtain employment and embark on career pathways. The VISTA will also help develop our employment and job placement curriculum, identify employment matches for our client, engage with volunteers, and participate in special initiatives and fundraising events.

Program Benefits: Living Allowance, Choice of Education Award or End of Service Stipend, Relocation Allowance, Health Coverage*, Training, Childcare assistance if eligible, Reimbursement for project travel.

Mission Statement

At Jovenes, which means youth in Spanish, we help homeless youth ages 18-25 leave homelessness behind. A home and family for those without, Jovenes provides an innovative program of stable housing options, compassionate care, life skills training, and employment support to young adults seeking a path to life change. Our mission is to help homeless and at-risk youth become productive and integrated members of our community. Jovenes goes deep with each youth we serve, focusing on housing stability, education and employment, access to healthcare and benefits, and recovery from childhood trauma. We empower those we serve so they can develop healthy relationships and make meaningful contributions to the community we share.

Description

Jovenes, Inc. helps youth ages 18 - 25. We provide an innovative program of
stable housing options, compassionate care, life skills training, and employment support to young
adults seeking a path to life change. As a hands-on leader and innovator focused on permanent
solutions to end the cycle of homelessness, Jovenes continues to grow through construction and
renovation of existing homes in the neighborhoods we serve. Our housing model includes
supportive short term and permanent housing designed to create a home-like atmosphere for those
we serve. Our programs are designed to take youth off the streets and move them into their own
apartments as they develop healthy living skills, increase their income, go back to school, and
identify career pathways. We have found that once youth have a steady roof over their head and a
connection to a support structure of caring individuals, they are able to continue their development
into self-sufficient adults. Our campus is located in Boyle Heights, a low-income neighborhood in
Los Angeles. We are the only organization in our community that provides this level of services
and programs for homeless youth.
