Wildfires are devastating communities across California, causing more than 300,000 people to evacuate their homes and threatening many more. The Camp Fire in Northern California -- one of three blazing across the state -- is the most destructive in state history. We want to ensure that, if you are in an affected community, you find access to shelter. And if you are looking to help with disaster relief efforts, you know the most effective ways to contribute.
The project site is located in Richardson Bay, a short boat ride or kayak paddle from our center in Tiburon. The 17-acre island, Aramburu, was created in the early 1960s by dredge spoils and fill from nearby development. Visiting Aramburu Island Sanctuary offers volunteers a great opportunity to view resting and foraging waterbirds. The main task of each volunteer event is to restore the island due to wintering waterbirds using it as a resting spot. We will be planting and watering native species and pulling invasive ones, and requires some bending over. The work is moderately strenuous.
We encourage our volunteers to bring good shoes, clothes they don’t mind getting dirty in and a water bottle. Those under 16 are REQUIRED to bring an adult volunteer with them. When you RSVP make sure to register all individuals. We are restricted in the number of volunteers we can bring due to the size of our boat, so RSVPS are required. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to RSVP. Thank you!!!
