Founded in 1990, the New York Legal Assistance Group uses the power of the law to help New Yorkers in need combat social and economic injustice. We address emerging and urgent legal needs with comprehensive, free civil legal services, impact litigation, policy advocacy, and community education.
Position Description:
NYLAG seeks a summer volunteer for the Pro Bono & Volunteer (PBV) Unit. The PBV Unit collaborates with community organizations and engages pro bono attorneys and volunteers to serve a greater number of people with unmet civil legal needs. This unit coordinates the recruitment and management of NYLAG’s robust in-house and pro bono volunteers. The Language Access Volunteer Program (LAV) is a new NYLAG initiative that recruits volunteers to serve as on-call interpreters for NYLAG staff. This program was created to ensure that language barriers do not keep low-income populations from getting quality legal assistance. In addition to projects from PBV, the Volunteer Assistant would also help recruit volunteers and manage the LAV Program. Responsibilities will include:
- Recruit LAV volunteers for in-demand languages
- Respond to prospective applicants and conduct phone screen interviews
- Manage a comprehensive database of LAV volunteer information
- Track legal volunteers from NYLAG’s One-Day Legal Clinic programs
- Coordinate and attend in house legal trainings for attorneys and summer interns
