Marketing and Communications Intern
Commitment Period: 3- 6 months Location: Kentwood, MI
Reports to: Advancement Coordinator Compensation: Unpaid
Hours: 15 hrs per week: flexible, 4-5 pm on occasion
The mission of the Refugee Education Center (REC) is to support refugee children and families to gain the necessary skills for seamless and successful integration into the community.
Position Summary: The Marketing and Communications intern will assist the Advancement Coordinator in building a strong media presence on-line. The position will focus on representing the voices of the students and families we serve.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
? Managing all social media posts, including Facebook, and Instagram, and twitter
? Post on Facebook daily
? Initiate a workflow in the Marketing Calendar and keep it up to date
? Organize and maintain photo library
? Work with program staff to develop interviewee list and story bank
? Update blog as needed
? Update REC Website when needed
? Potentially attend Advancement Committee meetings
? Assist with other duties, as requested by the Advancement Coordinator
? Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, or already attained a Bachelor’s degree (Business Administration, Public Relations, English, Marketing/Communications, Public Relations and related majors encouraged to apply)
? Preferred experience in Branding
? Must be computer literate (working knowledge of word processing, PowerPoint, Excel). Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop desired.
? Former Experience with Wordpress
? Effective communicator both written and oral
? Project planning capabilities
? Cultural competency and ability to work with diverse populations
? Familiarity with social media platforms
? Ability to work as part of a team
? Self-motivated, good organizational skills, detail-oriented, ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines, reliable and dependable
Expected Educational Outcomes:
? Broad and deep understanding of the experience of refugees in the greater Grand Rapids area, including understanding of the cultural background of major refugee groups
? Develop and enhance the social media and communications skills necessary to work efficiently in today’s professional environment
? Understanding of the day-to-day operations of a small non-profit organization, including learning about Marketing strategies and communicating effectively to donor constituents

Founded in 2006 by immigrants and refugees, the Refugee Education & Cultural Center (REC) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Its goal is to support families and individuals to gain the skills necessary for successful integration into the community.
The main objectives of the program are as follows:
- Empower refugee families to succeed in school and in life.
- Support refugee children to finish school and become self-sufficient.
- Provide refugee families a place to socialize to strengthen their families and their communities.
- Foster a lasting sense of community that will benefit both refugee and non-refugee families alike.
- Foster leadership development in the refugee community.
