Monarch Caterpillar

The Walama Restoration Project is seeking volunteers for Spring and Summer 2018 to conduct field surveys for monarch butterflies and their host plant (milkweed). Field sites are located in Willamette National Forest, approximately 1.5 hours east of Eugene, Oregon. Volunteers will be trained in vegetation and butterfly surveying protocols that are widely utilized by the National Forest Service and other Federal, state, and local land management agencies, and will gain valuable experience in plant and insect identification, vegetation mapping, and field data collection. Volunteers may work up to 16 days in the field from May through mid-July, with a minimum commitment of 1 full day (8 total hours). Field work is contingent on weather, so some flexibility will be necessary. Field crews will be mentored and accompanied by our Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator, and other professional ecologists. This is a great opportunity to build your resume if you’re interested in a career in field ecology!

Requirements

Ability to hike for 8+ hours across steep terrain in the Western Cascades (volunteers must provide their own rain gear, lunches, backpacks, and appropriate footwear)

Access to a smartphone (iOS or Andriod) for field data collection. Data will be collected using a free app (Avenza)

Educational programs and stewardship opportunities include plant identification, native seed collection, plant propagation, native bee surveys, monarch and milkweed surveys, orienteering, and mapping. Our contracting services include mechanical thinning, prescribed burns, and revegetation. We only use of nonchemical methods of invasive weed control in all of our projects.
