Northstar Tutoring is a one-on-one tutoring and mentoring program for low-income students in Washington, D.C. with a new location at Garrison Elementary School. (1200 S Street NW).
Tutors will be matched with their own student who they will work with every week. Student/volunteer pairs will meet at Garrison from 4:30-5:30 every Tuesday or Thursday (or volunteers can sign up for both!) and will help their student as they complete their homework and their daily reading log. Northstar will also provide educational games and reading/math worksheets for each student for when they do not have enough homework to fill the full hour.
In addition to tutoring sessions, volunteers can take their student out on a mentoring activity once a month. This could range from a trip to a museum or sporting event, or visiting a local park. These outings help to build on the volunteer/student relationship and have a significant impact on the productivity of tutoring sessions.
Please consider helping one of our fantastic students reach their full potential!
