The 2018 hurricane season has been extraordinarily active in parts of the U.S., with Hurricane Florence currently impacting millions in the Carolinas. As this natural disaster unfolds, the staff here at VolunteerMatch is doing its part to ensure that, if you are in an affected community, you are prepared and safe. And if you are looking to help with disaster relief efforts, you know about the most effective ways to contribute.
Our nonprofit serves advocates for human rights both here and abroad. We currently run an ESL program for recently arrived Syrian refugees. We are an all-volunteer effort (ages 12-72!). The Volunteer Coordinator reaches out to new volunteers, and stays in touch with our current volunteers (n=80+). A lot of this work can be done remotely from your home. Some "face time" is required at our program site in Wayne. (This site operates only 6 hours each week, Wed 6:30-8:30pm, Sat/Sun 4-6pm).
Our Volunteer Coordinator maintains a volunteer roster, consults with the Executive Team to invite volunteers to attend various events, sends periodic messages about our local advocacy, maintains email and What'sApp lists to let volunteers know when our program isn't running, etc. We also need someone to help respond to new volunteer inquiries. Training is available to help you better understand how GERA (Global Emergency Response and Assistance) works and what's needed in terms of volunteer power.
If you are an organized "people" person with good communication skills and prior experience volunteering, consider helping us with this important task.
