Community Action is searching for a volunteer or intern interested in supporting the Head Start with Community Assessment initiatives. Assist in a community assessment that identifies key needs and issues within our community through systematic, comprehensive data collection and analysis. Gain exposure to processes associated with conducting a Community Assessment.

Supervisor: Head Start - Health Services Manager/ Data Analyst

Learning objectives:

Gain an extensive experience of working with an agile team towards a scope, schedule, and cost bound project; Project will be determined by team-members and needs of the department;

Refine research skills by experience in identifying the primary and secondary sources of information used in similar community assessments;

Learn to develop questions aimed at gleaning information related to the state of the community;

Develop skills to detect and correct corrupt or inaccurate data;

Gain experiences on how to summarize data and make visually appealing reports.

Qualifications:

Must be seeking an internship for college credit or experience;

Possess or pursuing a degree in Public Health (Epidemiology/Biostatistics preferred), Statistics/Analytics, Mathematics, Actuary/Accounting, Health Informatics or related field;

Must be able to function independently with minimal supervision, accept support as needed, and be an effective team member;

Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks;

Must be self-motivated, dependable, and demonstrate both leadership skills and mature judgment abilities.

Requirements :

Excellent written and verbal English language communication skills;

Ability to practice confidentiality and HIPAA;

Experience using computer in a setting that includes use of Windows-based programs and Microsoft Office Suite for Windows;

Knowledge and familiarity of at least one statistical software like SAS, SPSS, R, or Excel.;

Ability to adapt to new processes, tools, and environments;

Basic epidemiology/statistics experience; Descriptive narrative skills helpful (not required)

Ability to pull a problem apart and figure out how to fix it or consult with supervisor;

Must be comfortable interacting with individuals from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds;

Access to a computer with statistical software to use at home or school (when not volunteering from our office);

High school diploma or GED; Pass a background check and age 18+

Physical Requirements: Normal office exertion required.

Time Commitment: 4+ hours per week for summer-term or semester, 8+ hours is preferred. Responsible to turn in timesheet on a monthly basis;

Location: 450 Syndicate Street N, St Paul, MN (site of meetings)

Volunteer from home or school with occasional meetings during weekday daytime hours.
