First Defense Legal Aid's main goal is to end incommunicado detention and false confessions in Chicago. On Malcolm X's birthday, Saturday, May 19th, 2018, First Defense Legal Aid will lead a citywide Day of Action to challenge police detention practices. FDLA will train and dispatch attorneys at each of Chicago's 23 police districts to defend arrestees' 6th amendment right to counsel. Meanwhile, community members will stand around neighborhoods of police stations to inform Chicagoans of their constitutional rights. Our community organization partners will also be participating in "Know Your Rights" workshops within their offices. Our Day of Action will be a novel, direct, and revolutionary way to spotlight the flaws in the criminal justice system in Chicago. This Day of Action is going to be an amazing day of service.
