ROOTS Young Adult Shelter is the states largest shelter for young adults experiencing homelessness. Each night we serve 45 young adults, ages 18-25, by providing a safe place to sleep and warm meals, as well as laundry, access to showers and clothing, case management services and a jobs training program. Many of our guests identify as people of color, LGBTQ+, or as members of other marginalized communities. At ROOTS we're committed to creating an environment where the forms of oppression faced by our guests are not replicated within the shelter space.

Unlike most emergency shelters, ROOTS is heavily volunteer driven. On any given night we have one volunteer or staff member for every three guests we serve, which allows us to provide the individual engagement and support needed for young adults experiencing homelessness to feel seen and heard. We are deeply focused on building guest autonomy, and work to create an environment where guests are at the forefront of organizational decision making and policy creation with the knowledge that autonomy does not stop at the shelter doors.

ROOTS is currently seeking two office administrative volunteers to support our shelter volunteers. This position will entail performing one 3-hour shift per week at the ROOTS office, any weekday between 9am and 5pm. During these shifts the administrative volunteer engage in the following activities/roles/tasks:

  • Assist with data entry and other clerical tasks
  • Create and organize volunteer nametags
  • Lead independent projects designed to support ROOTS guests and volunteers
  • Other duties as assigned by Volunteer Services Manager or Shelter Director
