The Tahirih Justice Center's Houston office is in need of Spanish, French, Arabic, Farsi, Amharic, Oromo, Urdu, Pastu speaking volunteers who will be able help with in-person interpretation and/or translate documents for our clients.

In-person interpretation will be on an on-call basis, Monday to Friday between 7:30am to 9:00pm. Interpretation skills are mainly used for Mental Health assessments, Medical and/or Education advocacy, Immigration Status Adjustment appointments, and in-person interviews for client intake appointments at our Galleria office. Telephonic interpretation opportunities are also available for client intakes for Social and Legal Services.

Document translations can be done in-office or remotely. Documents can range from affidavits to death certificates and community resources. These documents would need to be translated from their original language to English for our attorneys or English to the client's original language. These documents will ensure either that our clients are getting all their information in an accessible way, staying true to our client-centered and trauma informed manner or that when we file for our client's cases, they will be received properly by USCIS or other governmental agencies.

Training for interpretation are done in-office. Document translators are welcome to train in our office or remotely via Skype. Training can range from 3 hours (translators) to 5 hours (interpreters). A mandatory background check is needed prior to volunteering with the Tahirih Justice Center. There is a 6 month minimum commitment when volunteering with our clients to provide contentious and continual service.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email Piyu Sen, Volunteer Coordinator, at piyus@tahirih.org or text at the Tahirih Houston Volunteer Text line at (281)849-1572. Standard text rates apply.

Mission Statement

The Tahirih Justice Center works to protect immigrant women and girls seeking justice in the United States from gender-based violence. Leveraging both in-house and pro bono attorneys, we empower our clients to achieve justice and equality through holistic direct legal services and national public policy advocacy.

Description

Tahirih Justice Center is a national, non-profit organization that protects courageous immigrant women and girls who refuse to be victims of violence by elevating their voices in communities, courts, and Congress.

Since 1997, Tahirih has assisted nearly 25,000 women and children seeking protection from gender-based human rights abuses such as rape, female genital mutilation, domestic violence, human trafficking, "honor" crimes, and forced marriage. Our award-winning, holistic model for protection combines free legal services and social services case management with bridge-building public policy advocacy, education, and outreach.

With offices in Houston, Baltimore, and Greater DC, Tahirih’s programs efficiently and effectively leverage donated professional services from a vast network of attorneys, medical professionals, and community volunteers.

Inspired by principles of the Baha'i Faith, Tahirih is committed to promoting the equality of women and men, and works to create a world where women and girls can live in safety and with dignity.
