Join us in removing invasive garlic mustard from Oakwoods Metropark. We will meet at the Nature Center parking lot (look for the Metroparks vehicle and flag). Volunteers receive free day entry to the park, just let the toll booth attendant know you are at the park for a volunteer workday.

All necessary tools and equipment will be provided, as well as a water cooler and snacks. We will provide gloves, but feel free to bring your favorite pair! Please be sure to dress for working outdoors and in areas that may include poison ivy (long pants, layered clothing, closed-toe shoes, rain gear, hat, sunscreen, etc.).

Garlic mustard is a short herbaceous plant that grows in the forest understory. One plant can produce thousands of seeds that can germinate for up to five years. Garlic mustard crowds out native plants important to our ecosystems. Volunteers are an essential part in our fight against invasive species and in our work to restore and conserve our natural areas. Your help allows the Metroparks to protect unique ecosystems that will be enjoyed for generations to come.

Mission Statement

The Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority, a regional park system created in 1940 by the citizens of Southeast Michigan, provides excellent recreational and educational opportunities while serving as stewards of its natural resources. Our efforts are guided by the belief that the use of parks and exposure to natural environments enhance society’s health and quality of life.

Description

Every year, thousands of volunteers are needed to help out at the Metroparks to help preserve preserve the Metroparks and enhance the environment for generations to come. Volunteers of all skill level and interests are welcome!

Volunteers will give their time to nature or farm centers, or at Historic Wolcott Mill, to enrich the experience of every visitor. Nature lovers can plant and maintain flower gardens, or survey some of the Metroparks' plant and animal life. If you enjoy handy work, you can paint and refurbish signs, exhibits, and smaller buildings.

If golf is your favorite pastime, we can use your help on the fairways. Help maintain the pace of play, repair ball marks on the greens, move tee markers, clean trash, and perform other tasks that make golfing at one of the Metroparks' courses a most enjoyable past time.

Natural areas within the Metroparks need your help, too. Learn about supporting our native plant populations by removing invasive trees, shrubs, and plants, or collecting seeds to be sown at restoration sites within the Metroparks.

The Metroparks will provide all necessary tools and equipment, including water and snacks. Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the week and weekends. Individuals and volunteer group opportunities are available.
