ORGANIZATION: PhilaSoup

PhilaSoup is a non-profit that provides micro-grants (up to $800) to teachers in Philadelphia schools to fund classroom projects that enhance the learning experience of their students. We do this by hosting quarterly soups, where we invite the community to come together, share a meal and listen to three to four teachers present their ideas in need of funding. The attendees at the soup vote on which project they like best, and the winner receives the largest portion of the grant, but each teacher walks away with some funding! Grants are funded by ticket sales to the soup, with a matching donation from PhilaSoup. Since 2012, PhilaSoup has hosted over 30 events and granted over $30,000.

We are currently seeking a Board member to help us plan our quarterly Soup events. As Events Chair, the Board member would be responsible for:

  • Planning PhilaSoup Soups (three a year) by securing venues and helping secure donations (mainly food)
  • Helping set-up, clean up and run the Soup events
  • Planning PhilaSoup’s main fundraising event, Kick-Off by securing a venue and helping secure donations (food and raffle/silent auction items)
  • Helping plan grant-writing workshops (three a year)
  • Helping plan other teacher convening events such as happy hours
  • Helping raise awareness by networking and fundraising and promoting PhilaSoup
  • When able, representing PhilaSoup at various events related to the organization’s mission

We aim to convene diverse communities at our events who share a love for teachers, and we also seek to understand the complicated and various ways in which we can best meet the needs of Philadelphia educators. We need different voices, perspectives, experiences, relationships, values, and identities at our table in order to do this work as powerfully as we want to. We therefore are seeking board candidates who will be bringing these qualities to our team.

Mission Statement

To bring together diverse sectors of the Philadelphia education community as the convener of innovative ideas and mutual support, ultimately enhancing the learning experiences of our students.

Description

Vision: To create a positive professional environment that values and convenes educators from diverse backgrounds, and brings creative and exciting ideas to life in classrooms across the city.

Our Soups: Participants come together for a simple soup meal. Everyone brings $15, which becomes the grant for the night. During the meal, educators present their ideas for projects they would like to fund with the night’s microgrant. Each presenter has 3 minutes to present and then a few minutes to answer questions. At the end of the presentations, everyone votes for the project that they would like to give the largest portion of the grant to. Every teacher receives a percentage of the funds, and PhilaSoup matches the ticket sales to make grants even bigger!
