Mission Statement

The World Bird Sanctuary's mission is to preserve the earth's biological diversity and to secure the future ofthreatened bird species in their natural environments. We work to fulfill that mission through education, propagation, field studies and rehabilitation.

Description

The World Bird Sanctuary (WBS) is both a unique St. Louis attraction and an entertaining environmental education opportunity. With over 305 acres and 350 animals in their care, WBS offers a wildlife experience that is one-of-a-kind. WBS is home to eagles, owls, hawks, falcons, vulutes, parrots, mammals, and reptiles.

We achieve the goals set by our mission through focus areas:

  • Education - a team of Naturalists offer an array of education programs covering a varitey of environmental topics, all presented in an interactive style. We have a full time staff of 18 and strong committed volunteer corps that helps us to achieve our goals.
  • Rehabilitation - our specialised raptor hospital treats between 300 and 400 sick and injured wild birds of prey each year, which we treat and rehabilitate for release back into the wild.
  • Propagation - our breeding department breeds birds for use in education programmes, and breeds endangered species for release into the wild to boost wild populations.
  • Field studies - we have teams of observers who keep an eye on wild bird to monitor changes in their populations and habits in order to identify concerns and rectify them before they become major problems.
