Parade Volunteer for Child & Teen Check-Up Team

Purpose and Background of Role: The Health and Human Services Child & Teen Check-Up team educates, provides awareness, offers assistance, and promotes getting children and teens in for their preventative health and dental visits. Their target population is families on Medicaid with children and teens or young adults up to age 21. The volunteers’ purpose will be to inform, educate, and have fun by assisting the Child & Teen Check-Up Team’s during local parades they are participating in.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Meet the team at designated time at a timely manner
  • Carry a light banner and/or colorful logoed flags (optional)
  • Carry a backpack filled with promotional items (optional)
  • Hand out promotional items to parade goers at some parades
  • Pull a wagon of supplies during parade (optional)
  • Wave and smile enthusiastically to parade goers

Requirements:

  • Willingness and able to follow through with commitment
  • Able to stand and/or walk for 3 hours sometimes in the heat
  • Is a friendly, outgoing, and enthusiastic individual
  • Able to follow directions and show up on time at designated meet-up spot
  • Possesses patience as there may be times that parade volunteers/walkers have to stand around and wait for things to get moving
  • Respectful of all cultures, backgrounds, religions, beliefs, etc.
  • Wear free logoed t-shirt during parade

Time Commitment and Location: As a volunteer, you only need to sign up for 1 but if you want to do both, even better!Current 2018 parades:

    • May Day Parade: Sunday, May 6 th in South Minneapolis. Most likely meeting around 11:00am. Starting the parade around 12pm and finishing 3 hours later.
    • Northeast Parade: Tuesday, June 19 th in Northeast Minneapolis. Most likely meeting around 5:30pm. Starting parade around 6:30pm and finishing 3 hours later.

Supervision: volunteers will be supervised and given direction from the Child & Teen Check-Up staff who are present at the parade. The volunteers will also report their hours and receive support from their Coordinator of Volunteers.

Description

The work of our Department tends to fall into three major areas:

  1. Increasing safety and stability of individuals and families through services such as child and adult protection, providing temporary emergency shelter, and more.
  2. Promoting self-reliance and a livable income through a mixture of federal and state programs, such as SNAP (food support), Child Support, Veterans' Service, cash assistance programs and more.
  3. Improving the health of the community through public health care programs, restaurant inspections, regulating emergency medical services, providing crisis response to behavioral health emergencies, immunization services, a public health clinic, and more.
