Purpose of Role: SHAPE 2018 is a large-scale project assessing the health of the population in Hennepin County. One aspect of the project is to have teams of staff approach persons coming to Hennepin County Human Service Centers (HSC) and asking them to complete a survey with questions about that person’s health. Volunteers will assist with distributing and collecting these surveys.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Attend training on the SHAPE 2018 project and related job duties
  • Check in with the Supervisor of the Day (SOD) about any issues related to that day’s activities at a specific HSC.
  • Assist the SOD in setting up the display table and supply of materials needed for that day’s activities
  • Approach persons at the HSC and asking and encouraging them to complete the SHAPE 2018 survey
  • Provide any needed assistance for the persons completing the SHAPE 2018 survey
  • Follow the procedures for the proper care and management of the completed SHAPE 2018 surveys
  • Assist in the management and distribution of any incentives
  • Assist the SOD in taking down the display table and supply of materials at the end of that day’s activities

Requirements:

  • Be able to explain the value of the SHAPE 2018 survey and encourage people to complete it
  • Be organized and careful when reviewing completed surveys
  • Must follow the standard protocol provided by the SHAPE team
  • Positive, courteous, and relaxed attitude with exceptional customer service skills
  • Experience working with and serving diverse populations
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • The ability to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries with staff and clients while maintaining client confidentiality
  • Volunteers may use bi-lingual skills to help visitors communicate their needs to the staff - Somali, and/or Spanish are helpful but not required.
  • Volunteers must by fluent in conversational and written English.

Time Commitment: Shifts can range from 3-4 hours during the business hours of 9am-4pm. For new Hennepin County volunteers, we are looking for at least 15 hours of commitment to this project and preferably commitment to ongoing volunteering after the project is finished.

At the various Human Service Centers in: Brooklyn Center, Bloomington, North Minneapolis, and South Minneapolis.

Supervision: Volunteers will received training and supervision from the SHAPE 2018 team Supervisor of Day.

Description

The work of our Department tends to fall into three major areas:

  1. Increasing safety and stability of individuals and families through services such as child and adult protection, providing temporary emergency shelter, and more.
  2. Promoting self-reliance and a livable income through a mixture of federal and state programs, such as SNAP (food support), Child Support, Veterans' Service, cash assistance programs and more.
  3. Improving the health of the community through public health care programs, restaurant inspections, regulating emergency medical services, providing crisis response to behavioral health emergencies, immunization services, a public health clinic, and more.
