The mission of Abby’s Closet, an Oregon-based nonprofit, is to inspire confidence and respect in high school women by providing free formal dresses for prom or other memorable events. Each spring, Abby’s Closet hosts a Prom Dress Giveaway event to distribute the dresses, shoes and accessories that have been collected throughout the year. Abby’s Closet will provide a free (that’s right, FREE) prom dress to any high school student who wants one.
Alterations and Sewing Volunteers help with basic dress alterations during the event. Volunteers for this role should be capable of basic alterations and sewing. Volunteers must be women out of high school. Several shift times available. ATTENTION: Due to the nature of the event volunteers in this position must be female and out of high school! Contact Abby's Closet for more information.

Mission Statement
To collect prom gowns and provide them, free, to high school women. Receiving a gown presents an opportunity for students to join their peers at a memorable high school event, and to do so with the confidence essential to setting and attaining goals in the future
Description
Abby's Closet collects formal gown donations (special occasion, prom and bridesmaid) and formal wraps and purses year-round. Donations come primarily from the community, retail stores and high school dress donation drives. Numerous businesses act as donation drop-off sites for Abby's Closet. Each April, there is a 2-day Prom Boutique (gown give-away event). This year's dates are April 4-5, 2009 at the Oregon Convention Center. High school women from a 150-mile radius of Portland attend the event. Gowns are given away free; students do not need to prove financial need. In addition to a free gown, Abby's Closet also offers free wraps and purses, along with small give-away items, ex. makeup and perfume samples. Abby's Closet is run by an all volunteer, all female Board. In addition, there is a Student Advisory Board, made up of local high school woman.
