POSITION
Mosqoy’s translators play an integral part of the organization, as they are the bridge across cultures, communicating our materials and stories between languages and countries. Without these positions, we do not successfully uphold our values of accessibility, relationships, fairness, and inclusivity. This position will translate written material from Spanish to English (working alongside your counterpart, who translates material from English to Spanish). Material includes student letters to sponsors, website pages, social media, newsletters, marketing materials, and internal documents such as strategy plans, etc.
ORGANIZATION
Mosqoy works in the Peruvian Andes to provide economic opportunities for remote Quechua communities while nurturing their threatened indigenous culture. We have supported over 60 Peruvian youth to attend post-secondary education and currently work with five weaving communities. All of our board members and key staff are volunteers, and most have been with the organization for at least three years. Those who have moved onto other positions have used their Mosqoy experience to land exciting positions; such roles have included Communications Officer with the British Columbia Parliament, a social enterprise founder, and a policy analyst with the Canadian International Development Agency.
The ideal candidate is competent in both Spanish and English, a good communicator, culturally sensitive, accountable, and reliable, with a curiosity to learn more about our organization, our students, and weavers!
DETAILS
● Volunteer position
● Based in Mosqoy’s offices, either in Victoria, Canada or Cusco, Peru (or both!)
● Varies depending on workload (approx. 5 hours per week)
● Minimum 1-year commitment
● Start date: As soon as possible
DUTIES
●Translating internal documents for staff and volunteers, and for beneficiaries
●Translating marketing materials and external publicity materials for the general public
●Working in collaboration with our English-Spanish translator to ensure continuity of written communication across the organization and its programs
REQUIRED SKILLS
●Native language English
●Advanced Spanish language skills (near fluency)
●Previous experience translating written materials
●Ability to work as part of a virtual/distributed team
●Ability to work independently on deadline
●Accountability and trustworthiness
ASSETS
●Fluency in Spanish
●Coursework or studies in translation/interpretation
●Knowledge of Cusqueñan Castellano
●Basic understanding of Quechua

Mosqoy was founded in 2006, and is a registered Canadian charitable organization and Peruvian Asociación Civil that works in remote communities of the Peruvian Andes, offering opportunities for economic development while nurturing their threatened indigenous culture. It operates two social enterprises: Mosqoy Peruvian Textiles and Mosqoy Field School, which collectively fund its three main programs: 1) the Q’ente Textile Program, which supports Indigenous communities by revitalizing and supporting textile traditions in the Peruvian Andes; 2) the T’ikary Youth Program, which offers promising youth of the region opportunities for post-secondary education; and 3) the Mink’a Knowledge Exchange Program, which aims to raise global awareness and responsibility in schools and universities.
