Join City of Raleigh Parks Staff as we build split rail fence sections at Durant Nature Preserve. We have two days to choose from April 6th and April 12th from 9am - 12pm. Fence building projects are a bit more laid back than your average mulching project, as they take a bit more finesse, but provide a much needed resource to keep our parks looking their best! Split rail fences are used to define paths, for aesthetics, to keep traffic out of certain areas, and to define perimeters of gardens. They play a big role in helping us conserve our natural spaces and alleviate foot traffic in protected areas.

Volunteer Duties: Volunteers will dig post holes, lay out fence material, help assemble the sections, and help Parks Crew ensure alignment. No construction knowledge necessary! We will teach you and work with you.

Special Information: We will supply tools, gloves, snacks, water, sunscreen, bug spray, and a first aid kit. We ask that all volunteers wear loose comfortable clothing, and sturdy closed-toe shoes such as sneakers or hiking/work boots.

Shifts: We have scheduled two days for this project. You may sign up for one day or both as long as spots are available. The days are April 6th and April 12th and it will be from 9am - 12pm for both.

Work Environment: We will be working in an unpaved part of the park with the possibility of uneven ground. The work will be physical in nature as the digging area could be sandy making it harder to dig. We will be working outside, so be sure and dress for the weather. Restrooms are on site.

Volunteer Requirements: You must be at least 18 years old to volunteer. All volunteers will need to complete a volunteer release form that will be sent to them prior to the project.

Registration Information: Registration as a volunteer is first come, first served. All volunteers must register through a link sent by mary.owens@raleighnc.gov . If you are interested in registering a group please email her with the number of volunteers.

Per department policy, this volunteer opportunity is not to be used towards court-appointed/ suggested community service hours.
