Cornerstone Assistance Network wants to place a Literacy Project Specialist VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) at Tarrant Literacy Coalition.

Pay: $1,025 per month BEFORE taxes

The Tarrant Literacy Coalition empowers adult learners, and those who teach them, by providing high quality literacy services and resources so businesses care hire, people can work and families can thrive. We know that education is the key that unlocks the door to opportunity. Each day, we help adults by linking them to English language classes, high school equivalency programs, classes to prepare for the US citizenship exam and much more. The Tarrant Literacy Coalition teaches adults math, science, social studies and language arts so they can pass the High School Equivalency exam (aka GED). We also help provide English language instruction for immigrants and refugees, as well as citizenship classes. We help hundreds of students each year find a class in our community that is near their home or work which will provide them with a high quality learning experience, at no charge, so they can obtain the education they need to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. The Tarrant Literacy Coalition is a small nonprofit organization in Fort Worth, TX which was established as a result of the desire to see community and faith based literacy programs grow and prosper to serve more people, as well as to create a bridge between those programs and the state and federally funded programs that operate out of school districts and community colleges. The Coalition provides free and very low cost training and technical support to literacy teachers, tutors and volunteers, offering more than 2,000 hours of support to these providers each year, who in turn impact more than 5,000 students each year. Our staff is small, our budget is small, but our impact is LARGE and we have much work to do. We are looking for an AmeriCorps VISTA member who wants to be a part of something BIG, working together with our staff and volunteers to change the world, one person at a time

Responsibilities:

  • Improve community awareness of Tarrant Literacy Coalition through a Social Media plan.
  • Improve service to the community through increased revenue to the Tarrant Literacy Coalition through the annual Corporate Spelling Bee.

  • Work with existing staff members and volunteers of the Tarrant Literacy Coalition to identify emerging issues that impact service to students and literacy partners; work to improve services to students and those who teach them so maximum efficiency and effectiveness can be obtained utilizing available resources.

  • Health Coverage
