Farm coordinators are the point people for individual Alleycat Acres farm sites; they are responsible for interfacing with the neighborhood and demonstrating an active presence on the farm. The Assistant position provides assistance to the farm coordinator throughout the growing season and helps lead weekly work parties at one of our four farms.

This is a great role for someone who wants to learn the ins and outs of planning and maintaining an urban farm. Through this position you will learn all the skills needed to be a coordinator. This position has a flexible time commitment, but ideally at a minimum you are available to attend the farms open hours once a week during the growing season, as follows:

• Mondays 4:00-7:00

We are coordinating with the Cascade People’s Center to help maintain their existing gardens, and transform them into vibrant giving gardens which can support an array of educational programming. Alleycat Acres is responsible for remodeling the garden, fostering community engagement, and facilitating educational programming.

• 26th + Marion

• Tuesdays 4:00-7:00

Our first mini-farm. Operated by our Program Coordinator, Steve, on the planting strip of his corner lot, as well as his neighbor’s across the street. This farm donates produce to the East Cherry YWCA.

• Wetmore Community Farm

• Wednesdays 4:00-7:00

This farm activates an undeveloped Seattle Department of Transportation right of way in the Mt. Baker neighborhood, one block off of Rainier Ave S. This is Alleycat Acres’ first direct collaboration with the city. Construction will be complete in 2018, with planting is to begin in spring 2018.

• 24th + Main

• Thursdays 4:00-7:00

• 140 24th Ave S, 98144

Our second mini-farm, in partnership with Catholic Community Services and Monica’s Village Place. This farm began on the planting strip on the corner of 24th Ave S and Main St in Summer 2015. Plans to extend the farm’s area to the rest of the planting strip (covering one block’s radius) will begin in the winter of 2016. Produce is distributed to low-income residents of Monica’s village and the E Cherry YWCA.

Helping in the garden outside the open hours, facilitating harvests for our donation partners, and assisting at community events would be a welcome addition.

Through this position, you will learn:

• Garden planning, when to plant, and how to rotate crops
• How to create compost
• How to harvest various crops
• What to grow in the Pacific Northwest
• Identifying crops and weeds
• Managing and leading volunteers
• Working with and teaching children in the garden

Required Qualifications:

• Passionate about edible gardening, sustainability, and food justice
• A desire to work in community engagement

Desired Qualifications:

• Lives within the farm’s neighborhood
• Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds, including children, the elderly, and people of diverse cultures

• Experience in outdoor education or child care
• Leadership skills
• Foreign Language skills
