I’m sure you have seen the unforgettable speech Emma Gonzalez gave after the tragic shootings at Stoneman Douglas High School calling out politicians for "B. S.", ending it with the 3 most important words for our democracy... "Register to vote!"
A student group from Parkland contacted HeadCount asking us to facilitate their voter registration efforts at the march they are planning in D.C. and the sister marches around the country. We don't take a position on gun policy, but we sure as hell take a position on young people getting involved in democracy, and we'll do everything we can to support these young leaders.
Many of the pieces of this are still coming together, but this is the current plan:
- We will have a booth set up at West Bank Park throughout the duration of the rally/march.
- We are accepting as many volunteers as possible to canvass the park, march, and Statehouse.
- We will train all volunteers on voter registration, civil activation engagement, and canvassing.
- We will provide all the forms, clipboards, pens, etc., along with handling all the form processing.
- We will meet and train at 10am, and you are welcome to volunteer for as long as you like.
We have not seen a surge of civil action by young Americans like this in decades. The reality is we WILL be engaging with the youth leaders that will be shaping our nation’s policies for the next 50 years. We WILL be registering future mayors, congress persons, senators, etc. We WILL be there when the next generation takes the reigns of OUR future. Everyone is welcome and capable of helping achieve the largest single day voter registration activation Central Ohio has ever seen!!! You are welcome to bring your spouses, significant others, friends, children, clergymen, baristas, that one guy/girl you’ve been thinking about asking out, neighbors, etc.
