The Chicago Herpetological Society is currently looking for volunteers to assist us with our annual ReptileFest show. ReptileFest is the largest educational reptile show in the nation and features over 200 species of LIVE reptiles and amphibians from around the globe. Each year representatives from citizen science programs, conservation groups, museums, nature centers, veterinarians and zoos gather together to educate thousands of visitors about reptile conservation, natural history and captive care. For over 25 years our society has been putting on this show in hopes of dispelling the misconceptions, myths and stigmas regarding these often misunderstood creatures while raising money for reptile and amphibian conservation efforts.

Currently, we are looking for volunteers to do the following duties. We would prefer volunteers with customer service experience and/or a working knowledge of herps.

1.) Ticket sale attendants for Saturday, April 14th and Sunday, April 15th. Volunteers must be comfortable using either Excel or tablets, handling cash and processing orders.
2.) Face painters for Saturday and Sunday
3.) Educators/interpreters for our "Herps of Illinois" display
4.)Floor interpreters to present informal chats on our large display animals (large constrictors and crocodilians)

For your participation you will receive a free lunch from Al's Beef, a ReptileFest t-shirt and the chance to interact with exotic reptiles large and small. If interested, you will be provided with training materials and more information about the show.

Mission Statement

The Chicago Herpetological Society's mission is educating the general public about reptiles and amphibians, promoting the conservation of all wildlife, especially reptiles and amphibians, and encouraging cooperation between amateur and professional herpetologists toward a broader and deeper knowledge of the fascinating field of herpetology.

Description

With close to 500 members, we are one of the largest herpetological societies in the nation. Each year, we teach thousands of people about reptiles and amphibians by participating in community outreach efforts, attending environmental education events and hosting large shows like ReptileFest. On the last Wednesday of every month, we host general meetings at the Peggy Notebart Nature Museum which feature presentations by herpetologists and scientists from around the globe. These meetings are free to attend and are a wonderful way to learn about some of the research and conservation efforts being conducted to help these amazing animals. On the first full weekend of every month, we have educational displays set up at the Nature Museum, where participants can touch and hold a variety of reptiles. On the first Sunday of every month, we also host monthly meetings for our junior herpers club, which focus on educating elementary and middle school aged children about reptile and amphibian care. Come on out and join us for a meeting sometime!
