Mission Statement

The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum was founded in 1972. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to support and promote the development of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum by fostering and developing public awareness, knowledge, and enjoyment of horticulture and the natural world.

Description

The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is a 127 acre tract of rolling terrain planted with collections of trees, shrubs and flowers for the education and enjoyment of the public. A Colonial Revival Mansion built in 1891 for George Griswold Frelinghuysen as a summer residence and known as Whippany Farm was donated to the Park Commission by his daughter Matilda E. Frelinghuysen in 1969.

The Haggerty Education Center, opened in 1989, consists of two classrooms, a horticultural library and a multipurpose auditorium for lectures, exhibits and special events. A series of home demonstration gardens surrounds the building. The grounds also contain several walking trails as well as other gardens displaying extensive collections of plant materials.

The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in cooperation with the Morris County Park Commission sponsor numerous programs. These programs include adult workshops, lectures, bus trips and a spring Plant Sale as well as children's gardening programs and school and scout programs. Volunteers are absolutely essential to our operation. We could not function without our volunteers' help.
